Munchkins are often described as ferret-like because of their adventurous playfulness. One of their greatest characteristics is that they stay kitten-like in nature throughout their adult life, running, chasing, jumping and playing with toys. A Munchkin's climbing ability is not hindered by it's height at all and they are extremely fast despite their short legs. They will readily accept a harness and leash and seem to enjoy taking their owners for walks. They also have an adorable way of sitting up on their haunches with their unusually short legs in the air, like a rabbit which is why they were originally named the "Stalingrad Kangaroo Cat". Munchkins are a very social, loving feline who enjoy the company of children and other pets.
Munchkins may be bred to a wide number of breeds. Many people are breeding them to Persian, Siamese, Bengal and Abyssinians to create a very unique exotic breed. An individual cat's personality and appearance will depend on its inheritance. Munchkin litters will consist of both long and short-legged kittens, short and/or long coat and a variety of colors/markings but they will all carry the 'dwarf' gene, regardless of their height.
The gene responsible for shortening the leg bones in this cat is a natural mutation. The gene is similiar to that seen in a Basset Hound, Dachshund and Corgi. However, this breed has been proven free of any mobility or spinal problems.
